What makes a Cicero move different

Cicero packs about 85,000 people into 5.86 square miles. That density - roughly 14,500 residents per square mile - shapes everything about moving day here.

Most homes are two-flats, brick bungalows, and small apartment buildings on narrow lots. Driveways are rare. Loading docks are rarer. The realistic options are curb space out front or the alley behind, and both need to be sorted before the truck arrives.

Cicero is also its own town, not a Chicago neighborhood. It was incorporated as the Town of Cicero in 1867, and it runs its own parking rules, its own vehicle registration, and its own police enforcement. If you are moving in from Logan Square or Humboldt Park, the rules you are used to stop at the town line.

The landmarks are useful for orienting a crew. One of the original Hawthorne Works towers still stands near Cermak Road and Cicero Avenue, a remnant of the Western Electric plant that opened in 1905. Morton College sits on South Central Avenue, and Cicero Community Park is a few blocks east near Laramie Avenue and 34th Street. Town Hall sits at 4949 West Cermak Road.

Parking, permits, and access in Cicero

You do not need a Chicago moving permit in Cicero

Chicago's temporary no-parking permit process, run through CDOT, does not apply in Cicero. Cicero is a separate municipality with its own code. If you are moving from a Chicago address to a Cicero address, you may need to handle a permit on the Chicago end and nothing on the Cicero end.

Check the posted signs on your block first

Cicero's Town Code prohibits parking on any street where the Commissioner of Public Works has posted "No Parking" signs, and those signs list the specific days and hours the restriction applies. The town uses them for street sweeping, paving, curb repair, and tree trimming.

This is enforced year round. Fines run from $50 to $100 per violation. If a vehicle accumulates three or more overdue citations in a calendar year, further violations result in the vehicle being towed at the owner's expense.

The code splits streets into two categories. Major Streets are 16th, 26th, 31st, and 35th Streets, 50th Avenue between Roosevelt and 26th, Laramie Avenue, Central Avenue, Cermak Road, the south side of Roosevelt Road, and the north side of Pershing Road. Every other street in town counts as a Residential Street. Signs can appear on either.

Get your Cicero vehicle sticker after you move in

Cicero requires a current Town vehicle sticker for every vehicle registered to a Cicero address. Buying one late adds a $50 late fee, and new residents have 30 days after moving in to buy one without it.

Stickers cost $50 per vehicle for up to four vehicles per household and go on the lower right passenger side of the front windshield. The annual deadline is July 1. The Town Collector's Office at Town Hall handles applications, in person or online, and has a page specifically for new residents.

Moving between Cicero and Chicago, Oak Park, or Berwyn

Cicero borders Chicago on the north and east, and the CTA Pink Line connects the two directly. The line ends at 54th/Cermak in Cicero and runs through the West Side and West Loop into downtown. That makes Cicero-to-West-Loop and Cicero-to-Pilsen moves some of the most common trips we run in this part of the metro.

Watch the rules on the other end. Oak Park prohibits street parking on all streets from 2:30 to 6 a.m., seven days a week, year round, unless you have a permit or pass. Berwyn sits about a mile west of the 54th/Cermak terminal and has its own restrictions.
